Starting from November 2024, the Schengen area will introduce the Entry/Exit System (EES), which will change how travelers enter and exit these countries12. Here are the key points:
Biometric Registration: On your first visit, you’ll need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo, at the port or airport upon arrival. This will replace the current system of manually stamping passports12.
Digital Record: Your biometric data will be stored in a digital record valid for three years. For subsequent visits within this period, you will only need to provide a fingerprint or photo at the border.
Longer Queues: Travellers to and from the UK and Europe can expect longer queues at borders, especially at busy ports and international stations like Dover, Eurotunnel, and St Pancras, as the new system is implemented.
ETIAS Authorization: From 2025, travelers will also need to apply for the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) before entering Schengen countries. This involves providing personal information and paying a small fee.
Additionally, your passport must be issued within the last 10 years and be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen area.
